AXIS MUNDI

The World Axis (Latin axis mundi), also celestial axis or world pillar, is a fundamental concept in cosmogonic myths and refers to the connection between the center of heaven and earth. The axis of the World Tree pierces the various levels of reality, thus offering a way to advance from one form of existence to another. With the help of and along this world axis, the shaman, the witch, or even the wise seer moves to other levels of existence in order to establish contact with beings above and below ground, ancestors, and spirits, in the service of the community.

Through shadowed gates I’ll walk alone,
and enter into the vast unknown,

then for the world I will be dead,
