Caesar´s Palace, 14th of March 44, Cleopatra and Caesar meet for a last time.
Cleopatra and Caesar
[Casear]
We haven´t seen each other
for quite a while, my dear,
I have been busy fighting wars,
a soldiers life is tough,
but one thing must be clear:
I never messed around with whores.
I´ve always been faithful to you, my dear,
I hope you´ve been faithful to me, too.
So please, for a moment: lend me your ear
Cause I want to talk to you:
My beautiful wife, come and dance with me,
Just follow my step, take my hand,
Together we´ll dance into heaven, you´ll see,
unless you’ve got plans with some “friend.”
[Cleopatra]
I was longing for you, while you were away,
I promise - today I´m all yours,
I mean I am yours - EVERY day !
every day and every night - of course.
Come on, brave soldier, and dance with me,
we´ll waltz through fire and flame,
forget all the rumors — just hold me tight,
It’s only YOUR heart, that I claim.
[Casear]
Oh Cleo, my wife, I enjoy to be
with you and Caesarion our son,
he reminds me a lot of Mark Anthony,
we fought in many battles and won.
[Cleopatra]
Forget about Mark, he means nothing to me,
for I belong only to you,
you conquered my heart, what a victory.
[she turns to the audience, talking to herself]
It´s so sad, I have to lie to you ...
[Casear]
Come on my love, won´t you dance with me,
one LAST time our bodies embrace,
Yes, maybe it really will be the last time,
that I see your beautiful face.
[Both]
So let us enjoy our last dance,
Yes, let us enjoy our last dance,
and put an end to this romance !
Cleopatra and Caesar: A Royal Alliance Ends in Tragedy
In 48 B.C., Cleopatra VII, the brilliant and ambitious Queen of Egypt, met Julius Caesar in Alexandria during a period of civil war. Legend says she had herself smuggled into his quarters wrapped in a rug. The two formed both a political and romantic alliance. Caesar helped Cleopatra reclaim her throne, and in return, she offered him loyalty, wealth — and a son, Caesarion.
Their affair shocked Rome. When Caesar returned, Cleopatra followed with Caesarion, hoping for recognition — but Rome saw her as a dangerous foreign queen. Caesar’s growing power and his ties to Cleopatra contributed to his assassination in 44 B.C.
Left vulnerable, Cleopatra returned to Egypt. Their story ended not with love fulfilled, but with death, betrayal, and the fall of empires — a tragic prelude to her next doomed relationship, with Mark Antony.
